Thank you also to all those who made a contribution to SENSE. Nigel was an unusual and very talented man who will be much missed by many people. He faced his last illness with bravery and fortitude and we are all extremely proud of him.
Stephen, Robin and Pam.
Nigel was described by Kevin Foster, a work colleague, as “single minded and willing to plough his own furrow”
Alan Finch, another work colleague, said “he was the best boss I had at Redac”
Sheila, a friend of over 45 years, called him “a brilliant one off character”
His nieces fondly remembered their uncle and the good times they had at the family farm as children.
Neighbours felt as if they had lost a family member and commented on his kind and gentle spirit.
Malcolm, a close friend and colleague, called him a gentle giant with an impressive intellect.
Pete O'Shea, a close friend, referred to Nigel as “a significant and enduring figure in my life who was always willing to help”.
According to another close friend Lieve, he was “simply the best”.
Nigel's funeral will take place at the Cheltenham Crematorium at 1200 hours on Wednesday the 16th January. We will be celebrating his life afterwards at 'The Beckford' on the A46 at Beckford, GL20 7AN.
No flowers but any donations in his memory should be made to to SENSE, the charity for deaf/ blind children and sent to Greenfields Funeral Services, Shotts Farm, Staunton, GL19 3NZ ( please remember to say who it is from and in whose memory it is for).
It would be most helpful if anyone who will be joining us at The Beckford would e-mail the number in their party to nigel@vine.co.uk as catering for funerals is a nightmare
The last few days were very peaceful and he slept nearly all the time.
Thank you to everyone who has shown interest in his last journey. Details of funeral arrangements will be posted on this site very soon.
Unfortunately radiotherapy has had no effect and all treatments and interventions have been discontinued. Cancer of the paritod (salivary) gland is rare, difficult to treat and can be very aggressive. This one has certainly lived up to its reputation.
Nigel is being looked after by the excellent palliative care team at Cheltenham General and is reasonably comfortable.
Nigel is part way through his treatment but unfortunately there have been delays because of bank holidays and a chest infection. So there is no obvious progress yet, but fingers crossed. The first few days in hospital were a bit dodgy but he is receiving excellent care now that he has landed in the right ward.
All your messages and pictures are being printed and passed on to him - thank you everyone. As previously, please don't phone but emails are welcome.
Nigel
has recently been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing
treatment.in Rendcome ward at Cheltenham General Hospital He is very ill at present but hopefully there
will be
better news in a few weeks and I am sure he would then welcome visitors.
Unfortunately he can not receive e-mails or telephone calls at the moment
so any good wishes are best sent the old fashioned way to his home.
His mail is taken to him regularly and he
enjoys it during his better spells.
Thank you all for your concern and I will keep you informed through
this site.
If you wish to contact me please do not phone, I can be contacted by email at nigel@vine.co.uk
